Praying For the
People of Haiti
I open my eyes in the
morning
Thank God for my warm bed
And I pray for the people of Haiti
I walk with a friend
before sunrise
through wooded streets and beautiful homes
And pray for the people of Haiti
I turn on the shower and
feel the warm water
on my healthy body
I stay in half as long as I usually would
And I pray for the people of Haiti
I put on clean clothes
Kiss my husband, and wake my girls
From their safe and quiet night of sleep
And I pray for the people of Haiti
I look through boxes and
boxes of cereals
And pour them each a bowl,
giving only what I know they will eat
And I pray for the people of Haiti
As they rush around
before the bus comes
Not as organized as I’d like them to be
I help them get ready without raising my voice
And I pray for the people of Haiti
The errands I “need” to
do today can wait
I Force myself to watch a scene of
a mother crying next to a body on the street
And I pray for the people of Haiti
I walk around my house
Turning off the lights
drink a glass of clean water I usually take for
granted
and do the laundry I always complain about
And I pray for the people of Haiti
I send a text message to
donate
I vow to take nothing for granted today
Even though I know I will
And I pray for the people of Haiti
